W&M PhysicalTheatre

Monteros and Mochniej founded their dance theatre company in 1994. The journey began in Gdansk (Dance Theatre of Gdansk) which later evolved into W&M Physical Theatre. The result of their work in Poland has given birth to the Gdansk Contemporary Dance School and two festivals- Dance Explosions and the International Festival of Improvisation. These events helped to establish the dance calendar in Poland.

This dynamic pair constantly searches for new ways to explore the body, breath, and voice in conjunction with the Polish theatre tradition; a search that continually results in intense experiences for their audiences. While W&M Physical Theatre had its roots in Poland, the company is now establishing a new home at the Centre for Movement Arts in Calgary.

Between choreographing new performances across seas, Monteros works as an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, while Mochniej has worked as a guest artist at the same institution since 1994. Some of their previous performances include Life is Good, Secret Moments, Made in Polska, Frames, Cells, and Bone Songs; performances which were described as “powerful, mesmerizing, and beautifully poetic” (Dance Connection). Working with both Polish and Canadian dancers, their work is characterized by a strong visual world, a deliberate layering of themes and extreme shifts of physical energy.

“They have the gift to create tight and stylistically strong works which hit precisely and deeply into the viewer’s subconscious.”
