The dance organization ”Artistique” was founded in 1986 with a focus on youth training and performance. It later became Youth Dance Unlimited and in 2003 changed its name to eko dance projects.
Erin O'Connor was appointed Artistic Director of the organization in 1991 and held that position until June 2007, offering more than 16 years of leadership and guiding the society through a significant metamorphosis. As YDU, it was a training ground for many young dancers and numbers of well-known Calgary choreographers, supporting the work of both established and emerging artists. In 2003, the organization changed its name eko dance projects and developed its reputation as an essential community dance organization which included a professional, multi generational dance company.
In June 2007 the artistic leadership of the organization was passed to Melissa Monteros and Wojciech Mochniej, W&M Physical Theatre. This new incarnation of Eko Dance Projects will continue to reflect the commitment to the art form, to youth, and to community in dance. We salute the many contributions of the former Artistic Director, and all the artists and board members who have contributed to the health and longevity of the organization.
The new eko dance projects will continue to offer a context for contemporary life by engaging communities, deepening personal and community connections and experiencing movement. We salute the many contributions of the former Artistic Director and all the artists and board members who have contributed to the health and longevity of the organization.
